The Caterpillar 587T Pipelayer in 1:50th scale was in 2010 released by Norscot.
The Caterpillar 587T Pipelayer from Norscot comes in the typical Caterpillar branded colored carton box with blister view packaging with the usual tightly wound ties securely holding the model to the base. Further more no information about the real machine but the just the basic features of the model are described.
The Norscot model version has the optional enclosed cabin of the real machine which gives extra value for money. Detail around the body and cabin is better with plenty of plastic handrails, and lights and wipers. There are some good small details including tiny graphics, and a (fixed) tow bar pin at the front.
The metal tracks are good although the detailing on the track frames is less good with the lower rollers represented within the casting and the drive sprockets share a common axle so both tracks roll together.
The counterweight is modelled well with the separate counterweight slabs represented within the casting. The counterweight pivoting mechanism works well. The rivets used are discrete and painted so the model looks good. Detail in the winch area is fine although brass pulleys are used throughout which give the impression of quality but never really look authentic.
Both winches are functional. The boom can be raised and lowered but there is not enough thread to fully lower the boom. The hook can also be adjusted although again there is only enough thread on the drum to lower the hook half way.
