The Caterpillar 963 Track Loader was introduced in 1981 in the USA and Japan. Production began in France a year later. The 963 was manufactured in the USA, with a 06Z or 11Z; in Japan, with a 29S or 48Z prefix; and in France, with an 18Z or 21Z prefix. The 48Z and 11Z are Low Ground Pressure units. Both American units have a rollover protection system cab.

The Caterpillar 963B series Track Loader was introduced in 1994. It was manufactured in France only. The 963B was given a 9BL serial number prefix. Production of 963B ended in 1997; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 963C.

The Caterpillar 963C Track Loader was introduced in 1997. It was also manufactured in France only. The 963C was given a 2DS serial number prefix. Production of 963C ended in 2005.
